Sermon: St. Mary, Mother of Our Lord, 2010
August 15, 2010
Text: Luke 1:46-55
By my count, there are 132 shopping days left until Christmas. You’ve still got plenty of time to do your shopping and your planning and baking. But don’t put it all off till the last minute. Today is August 15 and according to the Church calendar, August 15 is the date assigned to commemorate Mary, the mother of Jesus. I want to take a moment and explain why we’re doing this.
There are a lot of Roman Catholics in Elmhurst. Some of you perhaps grew up in the Roman Catholic Church or have relatives who are Roman Catholic. Whenever Lutherans and Roman Catholics get together to talk about religion, the subject of Mary eventually comes up. Many Protestants avoid talking about Mary altogether which can probably be attributed to an overreaction I call Romo-phobia.
Women’s Guild Layette Kits
The Women’s Guild needs your help. As one of our missions this year, we chose to assemble layette kits to send to Lutheran World Relief. They distribute them to refugee camps, hospitals and villages around the world.
Last year we sent sewing kits that were distributed to women in Ghana. They made dresses to sell and also for themselves. Now we realize we need help with this project as our group has fewer members.
We would appreciate donations of checks or ANY of the following items:
- Two shirts or Onesies® (or similar item)
- Two gowns or sleepers (with or without feet)
- Two receiving blankets 38”x36”
- Four cloth diapers, flat fold preferred
- One sweater or sweatshirt
- Two washcloths, full size
- One bath-size bar (4-5 oz.) of gentle soap, in its original wrapping
- Two diaper pins All of the above items make one (1) kit and sizes up to 18 months or 2 years are acceptable also.
