The Sign Committee met Jan 22 and approved the sign shown above. It includes a panel with a new logo. The color will be the same as the directional signs installed last fall around the Center parking lot. The base will be evergreens, such as Blue Rug Juniper. We’ll be filing for the Zoning Conditional Use permit soon and hope to have the new sign in operation by July. The zoning process will be 2-3 months, bidding a few weeks and procurement and installation a couple of months.

Thanks to all of you who increased your offerings or allocated funds for this project. In 2011 you raised nearly 60% of the required funding. It’s not too late to contribute “extra” funds. When bids are analyzed remaining amounts will be allocated from Memorial Funds that have been contributed in the past. The sign is a major part of our evangelism and increasing awareness of our mission for Christ.

  • Princeton ethics professor, Peter Singer, believes that there is no fundamental difference in value between a human being and an animal. He believes that giving human beings special privileges is a brand of bigotry he calls “species-ism.” He also believes it would be fine to kill infants who are “disabled.” As you might expect, organizations such as the National Federation for the Blind and the Simon Wiesenthal Center object.
  • The Spanish parliament voted to grant human rights status to gorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutans. Human zygotes in Spain (or the United States), however, do not enjoy the same protection.
  • A child is born missing all of his brain but the stem. Most of the experts state that the child will never become aware of his surroundings, that he cannot experience pain, joy, or love. He will never learn his own name or recognize the faces of his parents. His reactions to certain stimuli are compared to a plant turning its leave toward the sun. Though the words are never spoken, the parents are lead to think of their child as little more than a vegetable. The parents are Christians and wonder if their baby has a soul and should be baptized.

The Redeemer Youth Group is again participating in the Lutheran Child and Family Services Bowl-A-Rama fundraiser on February 11 & 12, 2012.

Support our youth bowlers by making a donation!

If you cannot get your check to one of the youth, give it to Bruce Hasher or Julie Stiegemeyer no later than February 10. Please make checks out to LCFS.

Redeemer has been a strong supporter of Bowl-a-Rama for over twenty years, and this will be the sixth year that the Youth Group has fielded a team there.

2012 Chili Cook-Off – a Great Success!

Thank you to all who participated in Redeemer’s first annual Chili Cook-Off on January 14, 2012. We had 13 different kinds of chili submitted for the contest, and about 70 people attended. The event was mostly for fun and fellowship, but we also raised some funds to help pay for our new boiler. The total raised for the night was $509.00.

Some chilis were spicy, some were mild, some used chicken, and others used pork and beef. Each one was unique!

Music at Redeemer

There has been a lot going on with the music at Redeemer and a lot of exciting things coming up! After enjoying Christmas break, the choirs are all back at their usual rehearsal times, and recently more than 20 Redeemer members went around to all of our dear shut-in members to visit them and sing to them. I have been so pleased and encouraged with the participation in this outreach ministry, and would encourage you to think about joining us in the future if you have not yet joined us.

Some upcoming things with music at Redeemer include:

  • A new liturgy for Lent that will use many of the talented string players we have at Redeemer
  • Midweek Evening Prayer services during Lent
  • Another opportunity to sing to our shut-ins this spring. Stay tuned for the date.
  • A handbell festival in Rockford on May 5th in which our handbell choir will participate. There is a free concert that evening open to the public. We hope you will consider coming. If enough people come, we will arrange to go out to dinner together after the concert for those interested. More information will be coming soon.
  • The committee working on developing an outreach music program for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers has been hard at work, and we will begin offering classes next fall. I am very excited about this program and think it will be a wonderful addition to the music program at Redeemer. There will be a more extensive article about this next month, so be sure to look for it!
